The Austin Spurs have done their franchise proud by playing the right way
The San Antonio Spurs are a model franchise within the NBA, with their selfless, team-based approach and their focus on grooming young talent. It is little wonder that their G League affiliate exhibits the same values, and it is even less surprising that they have found success by focusing on doing things right.
The Austin Spurs took home the 2018 G League Championship in style by beating Raptors 905 in two straight games, thus dethroning the defending champions. By emphasizing ball and player movement on offense and quick rotations on defense, the team triumphed over a talented Raptors squad, led by head coach and former San Antonio guard Blake Ahearn. This could not have been clearer than in the deciding game, where multiple Spurs scored in double-digits and held their opponents to just 35% shooting for the night.
Beyond teamwork, the Austin roster is not short of talent as well. The defense is anchored by the hulking Amida Brimah in the middle and the versatile Jaron Blossomgame on the wings, although he is able to cover multiple positions. On offense, the athletic Nick Johnson runs the point guard spot although he has the ability to flush it over defenders on the break as well, earning Finals MVP honors for his stellar play.
However, no star shone brighter than that of Derrick White. The first-round draft pick out of Colorado made a name for himself with some spectacular performances, proving unstoppable with his variety of shots off the dribble and off screens. He has earned a call-up to the San Antonio squad for their playoffs run, and will be looking to prove that his game and the franchise’s commitment to team-ball will translate at any level of play.
