The myriad joys of basketball
When and why did you start playing basketball? Numerous NBA players have shared that they fell in love with the game at a young age, developing their passion and honing their skills over the years. For others, they were relatively late bloomers but worked hard on their craft to catch up with their peers. Although not all of us have the opportunity to carve a livelihood out of our hobby, it does not deter us from pursuing our dreams. Here are some shared reasons for our common passion.
Swish: For many, the love starts with a simple sound: ‘swish’. The beauty of the ball sailing smoothly through the net is a pure delight that only true basketball fanatics will understand. After years of training and competition, we often still return to this basic joy.
Pace: Basketball proceeds at a breakneck pace, with few stoppages and opportunities to rest. The fast-paced action can be a sight to behold and to partake in, making the game ideal as both a spectator and participant sport.
Teamwork: As a team game, basketball strikes a sweet spot in balancing individual ability and showmanship with the endless permutations of team play. Each player has a chance to contribute yet the sum must be more than the whole of its parts. Teams also give youngsters a sense of belonging and the opportunity to make new lifelong friends.
Hard work: At the end of the day, becoming a good basketball player is a relentless grind. Despite the effort required, there are few things more rewarding than the satisfaction of getting better. Basketball is a reliable partner which proves that hard work pays off.
Whatever your reason may be, just be sure to enjoy the game in your own way!
